Despite what anyone has told you, the Paleo Diet is not only incredibly unhealthy, it puts your life at risk for grave disease + it is a huge contributor to the demise of the environment. Dr. Gayl Hyde is a member of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The PCRM is a non-profit organization that worked with the American Medical Association (AMA) to change the types of prepared foods served to patients in hospitals to a whole foods, vegan diet. Because the evidence presented by PCRM is irrefutable, the AMA took action. This is an incredible milestone + the beginning of a huge awakening + shift regarding nutrition + health — a shift toward veganism + making it mainstream. A vegan diet is not extreme or a fad, it is necessary. The AMA + American Dietetic Association agree + the American Diabetes Association is on board.
It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegan diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate + may provide health benefits in the prevention + treatment of certain diseases for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood + adolescence, as well as for athletes. A vegan diet is defined as one that does not include meat (including fowl) or seafood, or food products containing animal substances (including eggs + dairy). The results of an evidence-based review showed that a vegan diet is associated with a lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease. Vegans also appear to have lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure + lower rates of hypertension and type 2 diabetes than non-vegans. Vegans tend to have a lower body mass index (BMI) + lower overall cancer rates. Features of a vegan diet that may reduce risk of chronic disease include lower intakes of saturated fat + cholesterol + higher intakes of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, soy products, fiber + phytochemicals (biologically active compounds found in plants). The variability of dietary practices among vegans makes individual assessment of dietary adequacy essential. Food + nutrition professionals play key roles in educating vegans about sources of specific nutrients, food purchase, food preparation + dietary modifications to meet their needs.
