Naturopathic Medicine at Body Blu – Natural, Prevention-Based Primary Care
At Body Blu Medical Center, naturopathic medicine is a cornerstone of our approach to wellness — blending modern science with natural, evidence‑informed therapies to help patients achieve balanced health, vitality, and long‑term disease prevention. Our focus goes beyond symptom management to explore and address the root causes of illness for lasting well‑being.
What Is Naturopathic Medicine? – A Holistic, Root‑Cause Approach
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care that emphasizes prevention, education, and therapies drawn from both natural and scientific traditions. Unlike conventional care that often focuses on suppressing symptoms, naturopathic medicine is designed to activate a patient’s inherent healing mechanisms and promote optimal health.
At its core, this philosophy includes:
Whole‑person care — considering physical, mental, emotional, and environmental influences on health.
Root‑cause diagnosis — identifying underlying imbalances rather than only treating symptoms.
Natural, minimally invasive therapies — using herbal medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, lifestyle counseling, and more.
Education and prevention — guiding patients toward daily habits that support long‑term wellness.
This philosophy aligns with a foundational naturopathic concept known as vis medicatrix naturae — the healing power of nature — a principle first articulated by ancient Greek physician Hippocrates and foundational to naturopathic practice.
According to the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, naturopathic medicine is a healthcare system that aims to prevent and treat disease by addressing its root causes through a holistic, whole-person approach.
The Role of a Naturopathic Doctor (ND)
Naturopathic doctors are highly trained primary care physicians who complete accredited, four‑year postgraduate medical programs focused on both conventional medical sciences and natural therapeutics. Their education includes clinical diagnosis, laboratory interpretation, pharmacology, evidence‑based nutritional science, botanical medicine, and physical medicine.
Because of this comprehensive training, NDs are qualified to:
Evaluate, diagnose, and treat a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.
Order and interpret laboratory tests.
Provide individualized treatment plans that utilize natural and lifestyle‑centered therapies.
Educate patients on sustainable health habits and preventative strategies.
In states like California, naturopathic doctors are licensed to practice medicine, allowing them to serve as primary care practitioners for patients of all ages.

History of Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic medicine in the United States came into existence over 100 years ago + was developed by Benedict Lust in New York. While the profession by name is just a century old, the natural therapies + philosophy on which naturopathic medicine are based have been effectively used to treat disease since ancient times. The use of herbal remedies, dietary interventions, hydrotherapy + lifestyle changes have been used throughout history + in nearly every culture to inhabit the Earth. Hippocrates, a Greek physician who lived 2400 years ago, first formulated the concept of vis medicatrix naturae: the healing power of nature. This concept has long been at the core of medicine in many cultures around the world + remains one of the central themes of naturopathic philosophy today. Naturopathic medicine was popular + widely available throughout the United States well into the early part of the 20th century. In 1920, there were many naturopathic medical schools, thousands of naturopathic physicians, and scores of thousands of patients using naturopathic therapies around the country.
Naturopathic Medicine Today
Today, more people than ever are seeking naturopathic medical care + naturopathic medical schools are growing at record rates to accommodate the increased demand for naturopathic education. Presently, there are five accredited four-year naturopathic medical programs in the United States + two accredited four-year programs in Canada. Naturopathic medicine has an independent accrediting agency, the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME), which is the recognized authority for establishing + maintaining the educational standards for the profession. A nationally standardized licensing exam (NPLEX) has been established, which is used in nearly all of the states which currently license naturopathic doctors. Currently, many states license naturopathic doctors (as does the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and four Canadian provinces). In these states, they practice as independent primary care general practitioners, with the ability to diagnose + treat medical conditions, perform physical exams + order laboratory testing. In these states, many health care consumers specifically choose Naturopathic Doctors as their primary care providers. The national organization representing naturopathic doctors, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), is the driving force for the development of the profession. The AANP is instrumental in the development of the profession’s educational + practice standards + to expanding awareness of the vital role naturopathic medicine has to play in the future of the health care system in the United States. Today, naturopathic doctors are experiencing greater recognition as health care practitioners who are experts in the field of natural + preventive medicine, providing leadership in natural medical research, enjoying increasing political influence + looking forward to an unlimited future potential. Both the American public + policy makers are recognizing + contributing to the resurgence of the comprehensive system of health care practiced by Naturopathic Doctors.
Sign of the Times
The 1990s was a decade of great achievement for the naturopathic profession: several states received licensure, enrollment in naturopathic medical programs more than doubled, two new naturopathic medical programs were started, the first publicly funded natural health care clinic was initiated, a naturopathic institution was designated as a NIH Office of Alternative Medicine research center + two naturopathic doctors were appointed by the federal Secretary of the Department of Health + Human Services to the NIH’s Alternative Medicine Program Advisory Council (AMPAC). As we have progressed into the twenty-first century, the naturopathic profession is well positioned for a new era in health care. With more + more research supporting the therapies used by naturopathic doctors + the public demand for greater choice + increased access to more natural approaches to their health care, naturopathic medicine is poised to make the transition from “alternative” medicine to truly “mainstream” medicine.
